It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of one of our former board members and dear friend of the Centre, John Hunkin (O.C.). As the former chairman and chief executive officer at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, John’s remarkable legacy spanned 36 years with the bank before he turned his considerable talents to philanthropy, particularly within the not-for-profit sectors of mental health, health care, and education.
John joined our board in September 2018, providing invaluable guidance, wisdom, and leadership during a pivotal time for our organization. His tenure was marked by strategic foresight and humble leadership, helping us navigate through organizational changes, growth, and the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His consistent presence, insightful contributions and kind manner were instrumental in guiding our senior decision-makers.
John, a member of the Order of Canada, was dedicated to serving quietly and effectively, always contributing his expertise in the most meaningful ways. Known for his profound kindness and adaptability, he chose to step down from the board in June 2023, driven by a strong belief in creating space for greater diversity and opportunities for others.
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Susan Crocker and the entire Hunkin family during this difficult time. While we mourn the loss of a true friend and an inspiring leader, we are eternally grateful for the enduring impact of John’s service to our cause and the exemplary path he forged in philanthropy.
